Wedding Planner Costa Brava — Full-Service Planning for International Couples

The Costa Brava is one of those places that does not need much convincing. You’ve seen the photographs — the pine-fringed coves, the medieval hilltop towns, the deep blue of the Mediterranean going on longer than seems reasonable. You know why you want to get married here. What you don’t yet know is how.

Planning a destination wedding on the Costa Brava from the US, Canada, or the UK involves a set of moving parts that looks deceptively manageable from a distance. There’s the venue — which is not simply a matter of picking the one that looks best online. There are vendors who don’t always operate in English, a legal framework that requires documents most foreign couples have never heard of, and a logistics puzzle involving guests arriving from multiple countries who will need somewhere to stay, someone to meet them, and some way to get to a venue that may not be straightforward to find.

Spain4Weddings handles all of it. We are a full-service luxury wedding planning company, based in Spain, working exclusively with international couples. We have been doing this for over 20 years — on the Costa Brava and across the country. We know this coastline, its properties, its vendors, its rhythms, and the honest answers to the questions you haven’t thought to ask yet.

Why Costa Brava

The name means «wild coast,» and while that’s not what first comes to mind when you imagine your wedding, it is precisely what makes the Costa Brava different from every other coastal destination in Spain.

This is not a coastline of flat sandy beaches and resort promenades. It is a stretch of rugged cliffs, secret coves, crystal-clear water, and villages that look as though they were designed by someone who understood romance as an architectural principle. It runs north from Barcelona up to the French border, and within that arc it holds more variety than most destinations manage across an entire country.

For international couples, that variety is one of the Costa Brava’s most useful qualities. A couple who wants an intimate ceremony at a cliffside finca with 30 guests and an outdoor dinner under olive trees is planning a different wedding than the couple who wants a grand estate with 120 guests, a formal dinner, and a live band that goes until 2am — and the Costa Brava can accommodate both, without compromise on either.

The towns themselves are worth understanding. Begur sits on a hill above its coves and has a quiet, almost literary quality. Cadaqués, on the far northern point of the Cap de Creus peninsula, is one of the most visually arresting towns in Europe. Pals is a medieval walled village in the interior of the Empordà, surrounded by rice paddies and vineyards. Llafranc and Tamariu are small, elegant, and about as close to the ideal Mediterranean cove as anything in Spain.

Practically speaking, the Costa Brava is well-connected. Barcelona–El Prat Airport is the main point of entry, typically 1.5 to 2 hours from most venues. Girona–Costa Brava Airport offers direct routes from several UK cities and is considerably closer to many of the region’s best wedding properties. The season runs from late April through October. June, September, and early October are the months we most often recommend.

What We Do

Full-service planning means that we manage the wedding, not just the search for a venue.

Venue sourcing and negotiation. The Costa Brava has a wide range of properties — historic hotels, private fincas, golf resorts with sea views, rural estates in the Empordà interior, boutique coastal villas. We know which ones photograph beautifully and operate flawlessly, and which ones come with curfews, capacity limits, or operational constraints that only become apparent after the contract is signed.

Vendor curation and management. Every vendor on your wedding day — caterer, photographer, florist, officiant, DJ, live musicians, hair and makeup, transportation — is selected by us, vetted over years of working together, and managed throughout the planning process and on the day itself.

Legal guidance. Spain’s marriage requirements for foreign nationals are specific and sequential. We walk you through this from day one, set the correct timeline, and ensure nothing falls through the cracks.

Guest logistics. We coordinate accommodation blocks near the venue, airport transfers from Barcelona or Girona, and any pre- or post-wedding activities you want to build into the weekend.

Design and creative direction. We work with you on the visual and sensory language of the day — the ceremony setup, florals, table design, lighting. The Costa Brava has a particular aesthetic vocabulary — stone, sea, cypress trees, terracotta, natural linen — and we know how to use it in a way that is specific to your wedding rather than generic to the region.

Day-of coordination. Our team is on-site from the earliest setup call to the final goodbye. We manage the timeline, run every vendor brief, and handle every unexpected development — of which there are always one or two, and which you will never know happened.

Pre- and post-wedding events. A welcome dinner the evening before, a recovery brunch the morning after, a boat trip around the coves for guests who want to extend the celebration — we plan the whole weekend, not just the ceremony and reception.

What Couples Underestimate About Getting Married on the Costa Brava

Venue availability is not what it appears online. The Costa Brava’s best wedding properties are genuinely limited in number, and they fill up considerably further in advance than most couples expect. Eighteen months is a more reliable minimum for the venues that consistently deliver at the highest level.

The Empordà wind is real and requires a plan. The tramuntana — a dry, powerful wind from the north — is a regular feature of the Costa Brava’s spring and autumn months. A good venue and a good planner will have contingency built in. If nobody mentioned this to you before the wedding day, they should have.

Getting to the venue is more complex than a postcode. Many of the Costa Brava’s most beautiful properties are reached via narrow rural roads that are not designed for coach transfers. Working out how to move 80 guests from three different hotels to a hilltop venue, on time, needs to be planned in advance — not resolved the morning of the wedding.

Legal timelines in Spain are longer than they look. The civil marriage process for non-residents involves apostilled documents, sworn translations, and submission to the correct civil registry. Couples who assume this works like booking a registrar in the UK discover, too late, that the process started months ago.

Catalonia has its own culinary identity — use it. The Empordà region has one of the most celebrated culinary traditions in Spain — pa amb tomàquet, wild mushrooms, anchovies from L’Escala, local vermut and cava. Couples who lean into this, rather than defaulting to a standard international wedding menu, give their guests something genuinely memorable.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far is the Costa Brava from Barcelona, and how do guests get there? Most Costa Brava wedding venues are between 1.5 and 2.5 hours from Barcelona–El Prat Airport by road. Girona–Costa Brava Airport is a considerably closer option for guests flying from the UK. We coordinate all guest transportation as part of our full-service planning — transfers, coaches, private cars — so that nobody is independently navigating a rental car to a rural finca on your wedding day.

Can we legally marry on the Costa Brava as a foreign couple? Yes. Spain performs legally binding civil marriages for non-resident foreign nationals, and the Costa Brava’s municipalities are well accustomed to destination weddings. The process requires specific documentation — apostilled and translated — submitted within the correct timeline. Many of our couples also choose to legalize at home and celebrate with a symbolic ceremony in Spain. Both are valid options and we’ll help you decide which makes more sense.

What is the best time of year for a wedding on the Costa Brava? Late May, June, September, and early October are the months we most consistently recommend. The weather is settled and warm, the light is exceptional, and the destination is operating at full quality without the pressure of peak summer.

What does a full-service Costa Brava wedding typically cost? International couples planning a luxury destination wedding on the Costa Brava typically invest from €45,000 upward, with the €70,000–€130,000 range being common for the clients we work with. Our planning fees are separate from vendor and venue costs and are discussed transparently from our first conversation.

We’ve already found a venue we love on the Costa Brava. Can Spain4Weddings still help us? Yes, and this is a common starting point. Many couples arrive having identified a venue and need help with everything else: vendor sourcing, legal coordination, design, guest logistics, and day-of management. We work effectively with existing venue bookings. That said, we always recommend a conversation before a venue contract is signed — there are things we know about certain properties that are useful to have before, not after, the deposit changes hands.

What makes the Costa Brava different from other Spanish coastal destinations like Mallorca or Ibiza? Character. The Costa Brava is a mainland destination with a distinct cultural and culinary identity rooted in Catalonia. It also offers easier logistics for European guests: no ferry or flight to an island, direct road access from Barcelona, and a range of accommodation across multiple towns. For couples who want Spain without the package-holiday associations, the Costa Brava consistently delivers.
