You are in New York or Toronto.

It’s 3:00 AM.

You are staring at the ceiling, and suddenly, the “What If” monster kicks in.

“What if there’s another global lockdown?”
“What if the airline goes on strike?”
“What if the venue in Seville turns into a pumpkin at midnight?”

Listen, I get it. You are about to drop a significant amount of cash on a party 3,500 miles away. You feel responsible for your 100 guests flying over the Atlantic. You want control.

But since you can’t control the weather or international geopolitics, let’s focus on what you can control: The Paperwork.

Let’s talk facts.

In Spain, we love life, wine, and fiestas.

But when it comes to contracts? It’s not the Wild West. However, it’s not the US either. You won’t find a standard, cookie-cutter policy that applies to everyone.

Here is the cold, hard truth:

It depends.

Every venue, every caterer, florist, photographer and every DJ has their own rules.

  • Some will refund your deposit if the world ends.

  • Others will offer you a new date in a year time.

  • And some… well, let’s just say you need to read the fine print before you transfer those Euros.

So, here is the game plan:

  1. Don’t Assume anything. Just because your venue in Miami has a “Hurricane Clause” doesn’t mean a Cortijo in Andalusia has a “Pandemic Clause.”

  2. Ask the awkward questions. Before popping the champagne, ask: “If I can’t fly, do I get my money back?” Get it in an email. Or better yet, in the contract.

  3. Insurance is sexy. Seriously. I know it’s boring, but get wedding cancellation insurance in your home country that covers destination events. It’s the best Xanax you can buy.

This is the real deal: Spain is safe. The industry here is professional (mostly). But you need someone on the ground who speaks “Contract Spanish” and knows which vendors are flexible and which ones are rigid.

You want a “Wow” experience for your guests, not a “Wow, I lost my deposit” experience.

For the love of paella, let’s check those policies together before you sign.
