The pledges you make to your partner during your wedding ceremony are your beautiful wedding vows. The promises of a forever. Every couple naturally wants them to be sincere, romantic, and meaningful, so there’s a lot of pressure to get it perfect!

HOW TO WRITE THE TRADITIONAL WEDDING VOWS FOR YOUR DESTINATION CEREMONY

Do you want to stick to tried-and-true traditional wedding vows or try for something fresh and new? Should you write them yourself or get a professional to do it for you?

What are the traditional wedding vows?

It’s important to remember that your vows aren’t intended to impress the congregation. It’s about telling the person you care about how you really feel and committing to stick with them no matter what life throws at you. There’s nothing wrong with picking vows off the cuff. After all, there’s a reason they’ve stood the test of time. There are plenty of other ways to make your wedding unique.

Church of England Ceremony

VOWS: I [Name] take you [Name] to be my wife/husband, to have and to keep from this day forward, for better or for worse, for richer or for worse, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, until death do us part, according to God’s holy law. I take this oath in the face of God.

Catholic Ceremony

VOWS: I [Name] take you [Name] to be my wife/husband, and I [Name] In good times and bad, in illness and health, I swear to be faithful to you. I shall love and respect you for the rest of my life.

ALTERNATIVE: I [Name] take you [Name] as my lawful wife/husband, to have and to keep from this day forward, for better or for worse, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health, till death do us part, for better or for worse, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health.

Civil Ceremony

VOWS: I hereby call upon these witnesses to attest that I [Name] do take thee [Name] to be my lawful married wife/husband.

Make a list of your ideas

With a pen and paper or your iPad, go to a park or cafe where it’s peaceful. Starting with some notes, you might find it easier to compose your vows in phases.

Here are a few questions to get you started and give you some ideas for what to say:

  • When did the two of you first meet?
  • How did the two of you meet?
  • When did you realize she/he was the right person for you?
  • When you think of him/her, what small details make you smile?
  • How do you keep each other in check? Is he well-organized, whilst you prefer to fly by the seat of your pants?
  • What is your motivation for getting married? What exactly does that imply to you?
  • What vows do you wish to make in order to have a good marriage?
